First of all, let me wish you all a Happy New Year.
But “Wow!” That’s what so many have said about the look of our sanctuary, this Christmas. It looks spectacular, so well done and a big ‘thank you’ to all who have been involved with the flowers, the crib, the Christmas tree and everything else.
But thanks also to all those who have contributed to the life of the parish throughout the year – albeit a very different year! – the parish council and all the groups and activity that they lead or coordinate – including our AIC, our M.C. and altar servers, the teams for baptism, first holy communion, confirmation, and children’s liturgies, our hard working finance team, our gift aid organiser, our premises committee; our offertory collection counters, our incredible stewarding teams at masses, without whom the church could not open, our coffee morning organisers, our events committee, the SVP team, the liturgy committee, our newsletter team, the representatives for diocesan and national charities, our hall staff, our meeting point helpers, the church care team, the organist, the choir and their leader, our Eucharistic ministers, shop staff and sacristans, the parish secretary, our readers, the parish registers keeper, the safeguarding team and the fantastic person who runs our website and has filmed and uploaded all our on-line masses, and who offers other technical support. On behalf of the whole parish, I say a big thank you to you all. Not everything could happen this year but much did. Thanks also to everyone who has attended and patiently accepted all the restrictions we have to live with these days

But as we say ‘Goodbye’ to the old year and begin this New Year let me wish you and your families every blessing. We live with great hope in what medical science has come up with, and we live in great debt to the brave doctors, nurses and carers who try to keep us safe and well. We must continue to pray for them as they try to look after us under such a terrible strain.

Please note that Wednesday is the Feast of the Epiphany and that Christmastime ends next weekend with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord.

God Bless.

STEWARDING
We are very grateful to the stewards who have volunteered to staff the church during these times.
Please ring John Rayer (01322 523499) if you can help.

CHURCH CLEANING.
A big thank you to the small group of parishioners who give their free time to help keep our church clean. The rota for 2021 is now available for collection from the cupboard.
We would be grateful if more volunteers came forward to either join an existing group or make up a new one. At the moment, each group cleans once every six weeks. If we had another group of three or four people, that would change to once every eight weeks. If you think you might be able to help, please ring Carole Hughes on 07762 731303.

PARISH MASS BOOKS
For a £10 deposit you can take a copy home and bring it to church each Sunday. There is a series of them covering 3 years, when the next is due, you simply return and swap your copy for the next one in the series, or return it at any time to get your deposit back. Ask a steward if you want one.

READERS:
A new rota is available in the Sacristy for collection. As it says in the Daily Missal “When the scriptures are read in the Church, God himself speaks to his people” so your reading becomes the voice of God. I would therefore like to thank you for all your efforts. God bless you for your ministry. Should anyone wish to join in this ministry, please contact me: Carol Anderson on 07913 698912 or carolmcanderson@hotmail.com putting ‘Readers’ in the subject line.

Please print off this newsletter, using the screenshots below, and post it through the door of any parishioner you know without electronic access and make sure everyone feels okay and feels connected.

Happy Christmas to you all.
These days of Christmas are more precious than usual, this year. We continue to celebrate the great Festival of Feasts until January 10th, the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. There is plenty for us who celebrate the birth of our Saviour to cheer, even though our country is undergoing such an ordeal. We have been truly blessed to celebrate the great day itself in church or at least through the website recording of mass. It was touch and go, but we did it! Congratulations to all who enabled us to do so, and congratulations too to everyone who attended and patiently accepted all the restrictions we have to live with these days. A huge thanks to the stewards who put in so much effort to help us do all this safely. The church looks fabulous as ever. Well done to everyone who has played a part – so far- in our decorations and celebrations.

It has undoubtedly been a tough time though for everyone but particularly for those living alone. Now would be a good time to (carefully and safely) take stock of anyone who might be affected at this time in spirit, mind or body and do what we can to share some cheer.

Finally, Archbishop John reminds us: “the Church regards each day in the Octave of Christmas – the 8 days from 25th December until the 1st January, as if it were ‘Christmas Day’. So, if you haven’t been able to attend mass on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day this year, why not go to mass on any of these 8 days with the same sense of joy and solemnity.”

God Bless

I think we have all recognized that tasks that we are used to undertaking have been more difficult of late! Organising a Parish Reconciliation Service has been one such task. But I am pleased to report that a Service has now been arranged for Monday evening at 7.30. Fr Paul Fennessy will be coming from Holy Apostles Church, Swanley to help hear confessions. We will run the same service in Swanley on Wednesday at 7.30 in case Monday is busy for you. Celebrating this sacrament has always been an important part of our personal preparations for Christmas. In the service we will reflect together on God’s mercy, consider our own personal need for forgiveness and then make individual and confidential confessions to the priests on the sanctuary in order to gain penance and absolution.

Masses: Christmas Eve: 6p.m. & 10p.m. and Christmas Day: 9a.m. & 10.30a.m.

Again, thanks to everyone who has reserved places for masses at Christmas. At the 6.00 Christmas Eve mass, stewards will enable individuals or family “bubbles” to be seated 1 metre apart using all our benches. There can therefore be NO KNEELING. The other 3 masses look as if they can be organised in the usual way with 2 metre spacing, which does allow for kneeling.

We want to safely accommodate as many people as possible and so we need to know how many people wish to attend each mass. There are booking forms in church for each of the masses on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Telephone and emailed bookings will be accepted too. It may be that on the day it is not possible to give safe admission to someone who has not booked in advance. This will depend on numbers.

Archbishop John reminds us: “the Church regards each day in the Octave of Christmas – the 8 days from 25th December until the 1st January, as if it were ‘Christmas Day’. So, if you can’t attend mass on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day this year, why not go to mass on any of these 8 days with the same sense of joy and solemnity.”

We are not allowed to enjoy communal singing, but we will listen to recorded versions of carols. Masks will continue to be worn.

God Bless

PARISH MASS BOOKS
It is good to follow the mass (especially the readings) in a missal if you have one.
We are offering the opportunity to borrow your own copy of the parish mass book. None can be available for casual or occasional use, but it is possible to keep and care for your own. Bring it to mass and take it home each Sunday. For a £10 deposit you can take your copy home and because there is a series of them covering 3 years, when the next is due, you return and swap your copy for the next one in the series, or return it at any time to get your deposit back.
