Dear Parishioners,

On this, the third week of our stewardship campaign, we invite you to consider how you might invest some of your gifts in the community that is this parish, and in this way give God a return on what he has invested in you, the gifts or talents he has generously given to you. You may be volunteering a good deal in the parish already, in which case this is a time to assess and celebrate your role and place in this parish, as well as your relationship to God as one of his stewards. There are many parishioners who do indeed hold a high stake in the parish. We would like everyone to. The parish really needs your help and support and right now, that’s in almost every area.

It must also be said that the outcome or expression of spiritual stewardship does not need to exclusively lie in the parish community. There are many organisations, local or wider, that need help. Wouldn’t it be a great witness if nearly every voluntary organisation, society or club in the area had parishioners of St. John Fisher at their heart simply because that’s how seriously we Catholics take our God-given blessings and our responsibilities to other people.

Let us not forget family life either! Many people are at full stretch sharing your gifts with those in need within your family.

And finally, prayer. If you have time, pray for this parish, that it may continue to be a community centred on Jesus Christ, that it may grow in its outreach and mission and that it may be an authentic sign of God’s presence and activity amongst his creation.

                                                                                                                             Fr Doug

A RETREAT FOR LENT:

Make some space to develop your relationship with God this Lent. Sign up for our diocesan ‘retreat at home’ called “Saving Grace”. Every week you will receive an email with links to a 25minute video in which our Archbishop John will introduce the theme and the reading. Chris Chapman will deliver the retreat, with others contributing. You will also receive materials to use in your own prayer and reflection. All you have to have to do is sign up and then set aside what space you can for Saving Grace!

Dear Parishioners

First of all, on this second week of our stewardship campaign, I just want to express my hope that you find this week’s activity during the sermon time to be one of joy and affirmation. It is a spiritual exercise attempting to see and love ourselves as God sees and loves us. We try to recognise just how great the gift of our life is from Him to us. I really recommend that you allow others to be involved in identifying your gifts. In the end it is God whom we credit with these gifts so we are not diving headlong into the sin of pride. So again, enjoy!  If you are watching the Mass on-line the leaflet referred to in the sermon can be seen on the “Stewardship” page on this website.

The Bishops have proposed new guidelines about restrictions to combat Covid:

“As stated by HM Government, there is still a risk associated with gathering in enclosed spaces so we need to remain cautious, but try to move forward safely towards a normal lifestyle. The main form of virus transmission is via personal oral or nasal aerosol. Those attending Church may continue to wear a face covering (both nose and mouth) but there is no need for social distancing, although those present should be sensitive to the needs of others. It is clear from scientific evidence that transmission from surfaces is now minimal.”

So, here in St. John Fisher,:

  • It is still good practice to sanitise hands on entry.
  • It is best practice though not mandatory to wear facial coverings. Please do so unless medically exempt
  • Holy water stoups are now refilled but the water will be changed each week
  • The Sunday Parish Missals will be reintroduced in due course
  • The usual form of church cleaning is deemed sufficient.
  • The Sign of Peace may be offered but with respect paid to those who don’t feel comfortable.
  • For the time being, Holy Communion must continue to be given under one kind only.
  • We will be considering how to conduct our offertory collection                                                                                                                                                                                   Fr Doug

Dear Parishioners,

First of all, a big ‘Thank you’ to Larissa and Rob O’Halloran for conducting our part in the Synod process. This must be one of the biggest exercises in listening that the Church has ever undertaken, with Roman Catholics in every part of the world being asked to share their experiences of the Church and to express their hopes and concerns for the future. A summary of the findings here in Bexley is printed below and this is what will be carried forward from here in February to the diocese. A national picture is then to be formed before the international worldwide expression of the Church is gathered in Rome.

You will notice that we are listening to an alternative Gospel this Sunday. This is because we are exploring the spirituality of stewardship over the next few weeks and in particular, its expression in the stewardship of our gifts. Recognising that we are gifted by God is a sacred duty and we will be undertaking a prayerful process of discernment next weekend. Wwe hope thereafter to invite you to further express your giftedness in commitments to serve each other in parish ministries and through these voluntary efforts to offer service to God. Please, please, please engage with it.

                                                                                                                Fr Doug

PARISH SURVEY FOR THE SYNOD 2021-23: SUMMARY OF RESPONSES

Thank you for those who completed the Synod questionnaire, which contained three questions on Communion, Participation and Mission.

•The gathering in the hall after the 10.30 mass was the most positively mentioned activity outside of the Mass;  Suggested improvements centred on connecting with people from outside of the parish, either those whose attendance had lapsed or those who have not yet joined the Churchl

 • Most respondents identified the Parish Priest and the Parish Council as effective ways in which to be heard within the parish.  There was no suggestion that it was difficult to be heard, should the need arise.

  • Young people and housebound/elderly people who could not attend mass were thought to be the least included.  It was also felt by some people that those with non-UK heritage were not necessarily included

•. Most people who completed the questionnaire agreed that the Church should spread God’s Word throughout the world, and that believers should reflect the Church’s teaching in their own actions;  Many felt that individuals’’ actions in the wider community could effectively demonstrate Catholic values and indirectly evangelise those who we meet;.

We will present a summary of the responses to the Bishop and Synod Team in February.

Larissa and Rob O’Halloran
