Emerging from Lockdown

  • Last week we reintroduced the offertory procession of bread and wine as well as the “collection” as part of our liturgy, but the collection cannot be taken through a basket or pouch being passed along the rows. I ask you therefore to please make your offerings in the baskets as you ENTER the church so that the basket can be brought forward in the procession. If you forget there will still be a basket there at the exit.
  • Social distancing of 1 metre is now all that is required, given that we are continuing to wear face coverings, that we are not positioned face to face, that the level of ventilation is high and that we are not yet returning to communal singing or recitation of the Gloria and Creed.

First Holy Communion and Confirmation

Some have asked what happened to our sacramental preparation for the children and young people of our parish. Well, with Lockdown the programmes have sustained serious delays but are underway. First Reconciliation will be on Friday 11th June, First Communions will be on Sunday 11th July and Confirmations will be on 10th and 17th July.

These celebrations are special to the individuals involved but to all of us too, they are a great sign of the activity of God’s Holy Spirit amongst us.

Please pray for the children and young people involved, for their families and for their catechists.

Friday’s Solemnity

Just a word about the Sacred Heart:

In Catholic churches and homes, a very popular image of Jesus is the image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It is the image of God’s love revealed in the pierced heart of His Son. It is the symbol of a love that conquers sin and transcends death, the symbol of the One who loved us to the end. Love has always been associated with the heart, so it was only natural that the love of God became represented by a heart, the heart of his Son Jesus. In him, God the Father revealed his infinite love for us. On the Friday after the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. A newer image, but a similar one, represents the Divine Mercy of God.

“SOME DEFINITE SERVICE”:  Missionary Network

The Church is made up of people and so is Some Definite Service – Catechists, Formators, Evangelizers, Deanery Mentors, Parish Leads. It is the goal and intention of the Agency and the archdiocese to invest time and energy in all involved in Some Definite Service, to ensure that those working in ministry are supported and do not feel isolated. Are you being called to be part of this network in a particular way? For more information, please visit: aec.rcaos.org.uk/sds.

THE PARISH HALL

We are beginning to make more use of our hall. Different activities are now permitted but as yet we cannot enjoy our usual social/hospitality functions. We hope that Sunday June 26th will be the first day we can enjoy refreshments after mass, and if that is so then we will surely mark the occasion – a generous parishioner has offered to buy the first round!

Please print off this newsletter, using the screenshots below, and post it through the door of any parishioner you know without electronic access and make sure everyone feels okay and feels connected.

Emerging from Lockdown

Restrictions are easing and the Church authorities have been carefully considering what we can and cannot do at this stage. We follow the advice carefully and so there will be a gradual lightening of our parish “lockdown procedures” as the weeks go by.

  • We have reinstated a Eucharistic minister to help with the distribution of Holy Communion at the 10.30 mass and will do so at other masses in due course. The ministers will receive special training in safe Covid practice.
  • This week we reintroduce the offertory procession of bread and wine as well as the “collection” as part of our liturgy, but the collection cannot be taken through a basket or pouch being passed along the rows. I ask you therefore to please make your offerings in the baskets as you ENTER the church so that the basket can be brought forward in the procession. All change is difficult, even when it is change for the better! Meanwhile I remain immensely grateful to everyone for your cooperation and to all who have gone the extra mile to keep us safe, especially the stewards.

PARISH MISSAL

Those of you with Parish Missals will see that your current edition expired last week. You are able to exchange your edition for the next one before mass today. If you would like to start using one, then for a (returnable) deposit of £10 you can pick one up from today as well.  We will need to use the same system of looking after our own personal copy for some time to come.  Safety first!

“SOME DEFINITE SERVICE”:

Archbishop John is calling the Archdiocese of Southwark to be an ‘evangelising and missionary archdiocese.’ In response, the Agency for Evangelisation and Catechesis (AEC) is developing a missionary volunteer network consisting of prayer, people and parish plans – Some Definite Service. What might be your particular part to play in this, some definite service? For more information, visit: aec.rcaos.org.uk/sds.

Prayer is the starting point. As we pray for our Church, we also pray that we may be renewed ourselves. Let us pray that we may know more deeply the love of God for us and the hope he gives, so that others may also encounter him. Are you interested in joining our prayer partners praying for the mission of the archdiocese? Email aec@rcaos.org.uk.

We are slowly emerging from the Lockdown necessitated by Covid. Restrictions are easing and the Catholic Church has been carefully considering what we can and cannot do at this stage. There will be a gradual lightening of our parish “lockdown procedures” as the weeks go by.

  • In response to the numbers now attending the 10.30 mass we are today reinstating a Eucharistic minister to help with the distribution of Holy Communion.  We cannot restore the practice of offering the chalice yet. We will reinstate ministers at other masses in due course. Be assured that the ministers will receive special training in safe Covid practice.
  • I am keen to reintroduce the offertory procession as part of our liturgy, but the collection cannot be taken through a basket or pouch being passed along the rows. I ask you therefore to please make your offerings in the baskets as you ENTER the church so that the basket can be brought forward in the procession.

I have a feeling that every step away from the restrictions will feel almost as unsettling as the steps we took into the restrictions a year ago. We will all need to be aware of our own reactions and manage them carefully. Meanwhile I remain immensely grateful to everyone for your cooperation and to all who have gone the extra mile to keep us safe, especially the stewards.
