There have been readings during this past week from the prophet Ezekiel speaking about the sheep of Israel having been scattered. It has felt like that here since Lockdown with the sheep of Bexley! Gradually though we are gathering again and last week’s Sunday attendance was approaching a half of our previous regular attendance. We’d love to see everyone back but with many still shielding the day is far away. However, do think about returning soon if you are still participating from a distance. We keep everyone very safe at church and especially now in the warm weather when we can linger and chat outside church after mass, it is a joy to be together again. I keep saying: ‘Virtuality will never replace reality!’

God Bless

It is pleasing to gradually be welcoming more and more people back to church. Please think about your return if you are still participating from a distance. We keep everyone very safe at church.

We were reflecting during the week on the presence of God in our lives. The ‘Spirit blows where He wills’ of course but He manifests God in very particular and reassuring ways in the ‘here and now’. ‘Where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in their midst, so we know He is with us when we gather as Church, which is why it is important for us to gather for Sunday Mass. He is there in the proclamation of His Word. He is there in the Sacraments, of course. He is there in all the ministries we undertake with him: stewarding, reading, cleaning, visiting, altar serving and so on. We are particularly aware of His presence in our service to others and we must humbly celebrate His call to us to be ‘really’ with Him in so many ways. Virtuality will never replace reality!

God Bless

You will probably have heard the news that the government has changed its instructions for attendance at church. It now insists that you wear a facial covering whether you are 1m or 2m distanced apart. This is mandatory from now on and applies to weekdays as well. Readers will remove their coverings while proclaiming the Word and replace them afterwards. The priest will wear a covering while offering Holy Communion but not during the rest of mass. Outside the church, coverings can be removed but social distancing still applies.

This change is made in order to keep us even safer and we must accept it in charity. It might remind us to keep praying for the scientists and other researchers who are seeking to develop a vaccine. It should also remind us to keep medics and carers in our prayers as well.

God Bless
