The readings this week seem to demand that we focus on marriage, but we are also celebrating a theme of “Thanksgiving for the Harvest”. On the edge of London, as we are, we can look one way to see farmland, and feel a connection with the land. But if we look the other way we only see an urban environment with no pastoral or arable land. Also, with many foods imported throughout the year we are barely aware of seasonal variation, and so it really can be a stretch to connect to Harvest in the way people once did. Nevertheless, it is important to try to do so and to thank God for the harvest of food that sustains us physically throughout the year. The shortage of truck drivers has reminded us how much we depend on many other people for our daily bread. Let us take no one for granted and pray this year with sincerity: Father, give us this day our daily bread.

Dear Parishioners,

As we enter October we take on board two great Catholic traditions: First, October as a month of Our Lady when many will make extra efforts to pray the Rosary. We at St John Fisher will be saying a prayer to Mary (The Hail Mary) at the end of our Prayers of Intercession even though they are addressed to God, Our Father. October is also the month when we are asked to consider the World Mission of the Church, so we will be praying for the work of Cafod and all those acting in the name of the Church to spread the Gospel.
