I am sure it made good ratings for the television companies involved, but I thought it very sad to hear about the problems of the Royal Family through the media. Important issues for public debate were raised, such as racism within public institutions, mental health and so on and with the public accusations that were made I am sure too that the institution of the monarchy has many issues to reflect upon. However, much was made of family differences as well, and I would hope that if it were my family that was involved, we would be allowed to heal and deal with the issues privately and not have our differences dragged through such a public domain. I think the Queen has said as much herself and while not shying away from the issues that are in the public interest, I pray that we can avoid indulging in some of the private family matters that many of the public have an unhealthy interest in! There is a difference. We might simply pray for that family instead.

Families everywhere have had to face a great deal in this past year. All have had increased pressures. Many have thrived as a result of the experience, some have not. It may take time for the dust to settle, for reflection and evaluation to take place, and for conclusions about the year past and the years ahead, to be drawn. We hold family life in the highest regard and so we keep families in our prayer. We also congratulate families for their best efforts in witnessing to God’s love, present in our society.

We have prayed for the safe return of students and teachers, but the return to school affects many others too. On Tuesday morning Bourne Road was closed and an emergency helicopter was heard, loud and proximate. Tragically, Gordon, the “Lollipop Man” for Old Bexley School was going to work on his bicycle and lost his life in a traffic accident. We pray for him, for his family and friends and for all the children who will miss him greatly. May he rest in peace.

To follow the Way of Jesus on his journey to Calvary – and to allow him to join us in our life journeys – is a popular and appropriate devotion in which to participate during Lent, both in private and in public. In private, use a prayer book or follow the version Fr Doug has put on the parish website. Publicly, we will be ‘following’ the Way of the Cross after mass on Friday mornings.

PETER’S PENCE
We do appreciate your support for the parish weekly collection, which many pay by standing order, but for everyone else, it is taken through the baskets by the doors as you enter or leave mass.

The extra collection is taken through the box that is in the lobby. Thank you for your support with these extra collections. We have been catching up on those missed last year through Lockdown, but today is the last one of those official collections.

This week’s extra collection is for Peter’s Pence. It supports The Holy Father and Apostolic See to exercise works of mercy and charity, and generally to service the Universal Church in a wide variety of projects such as helping refugees and other victims of war, supporting poor dioceses especially in missionary areas, supporting Catholic education and so on.

The weather seemed last week to put a bit of a break on our spring seasonal optimism but this week we see the children return to school and family life will return to a bit of normality. We all celebrate this, and congratulate parents everywhere who have had a huge burden to bear, one they didn’t expect, and we congratulate the children too who have coped with this extraordinary time and who have missed out on being in a learning environment with their friends.
The vaccine roll-out continues, and many more are receiving their first jab. Soon, we can expect large numbers to be getting their second jab and over 90% immunity as a result. Where would be now if medical researchers had not developed the vaccines? We thank God this week for so many blessings!

DANNY LYONS RIP
Kay Lyons and her family wish to warmly thank all who have supported them in prayer, with condolences and through masses for the repose of Danny’s soul.

FIRST HOLY COMMUNION
With hopeful signs ahead, and our church remaining open for mass, we are now happy to about offer a programme of preparation for those children wishing to join in Holy Communion with God and with the Church. They need to be in year 3 or above and attending mass (obviously!) We will be getting underway soon so please add your name and contact details to the list in the church porch if you want your child to enrol. Some of the programme will have to be delivered at home but as the children are allowed to meet we will bring the programme back to the church and the hall.
This weekend is the deadline for applications.

EXTRA COLLECTIONS
We do appreciate your support for the parish weekly collection, which many of you in any case pay by standing order, but for everyone else, that collection is taken through the baskets by the doors as you enter or leave mass.
The extra collection is taken through the box that is by the glass door entrance from the lobby into the main church. Thank you for your support with these extra collections. We have been slowly catching up on last year’s gaps so that we can justifiably say that we have kept the broader church and its needs in our minds and that we have tried to support as best we can. We are nearly there in terms of catching up and then we can return fully to this year’s rota.
This week’s extra collection, for instance, is for the Holy Places. This collection would have taken place last Good Friday had we been open. It supports the upkeep of the centres of veneration and pilgrimage in the Holy Land as well as supporting Christian schooling in the area. (We will have this year’s collection for the Holy Places, this Good Friday)

I like having a “roadmap” out of Lockdown – give me a map any day in preference to Sat Nav!!
Meanwhile, we continue to live with directives for what we do in church. I thought it might be helpful to remind you of the rationale for some of the temporary changes we have made.
• The first directive concerns social distancing. We are required to distance at least at 1 “metre+” though we mostly distance at 2 “metres++”. In our case the one “+” is that we all wear face coverings and the second is that we all face in the same direction.
• We carefully steward any movements and processions for the same reason
• Another directive concerns the length of services and therefore potential contact time. We keep to the essentials of mass and omit singing, processions, the Creed, and bidding prayers. We have made a compromise on the prayers and I lead just a few brief petitions. After Lockdown expect the return of singing, processions and extended bidding prayers with the list of anniversaries solemnly read out.
• A third directive concerns the air we breathe so we do keep the church ventilated and we omit singing and the communal recitation of long prayers such as the Gloria and the Creed.
With the “roadmap” in place, we will be looking to reopen our parish hall at the earliest opportunity. I advise all parish groups and other users to begin to prepare accordingly. I think that Lockdown has taught us not to take our social interactions for granted. Indeed, I think we can all recognize that there is something quite sacred about spending time in each other’s company.

Abdella lives in an extremely remote and mountainous part of Ethiopia. It takes him ten hours a day to collect water. He says his life is being wasted as he has no time for anything else.
