THE DEATH OF HER MAJESTY QUEEN ELIZABETH II

Statement from Archbishop John Wilson, Archbishop of Southwark

The announcement of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is a cause of great sadness for her beloved family, for the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth, and all people of goodwill.

We give thanks to Almighty God for Her Majesty’s life of unfailing dedication and the outstanding example of Her Majesty’s service, faithful unto death. As a devoted disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ, Her Majesty witnessed to the Gospel of God’s love for all people and worked tirelessly to strengthen harmony, to defend justice and to promote peace. We now pray for the repose of her soul, remembering the promise of Christ, who is the Resurrection and the life: ‘I am with you always, even until the end of time.’ (Mt 28:20) May Her Majesty rest in peace and rise in glory.

We pray for our King, for the Queen Consort and for all the Royal Family at this time. We offer to them our deepest sympathy and condolence. Let us also pray for our United Kingdom and the Commonwealth, grateful to God for Queen Elizabeth II’s remarkable life and selfless commitment to the promises she made at her Coronation.

We beseech you Almighty God, that your servant Elizabeth, who by your mercy received the government of this realm, and who dedicated her life entirely to the service of her people, may now rest from her labours in the peace of Christ which surpasses all understanding. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Dear Parishioners

I, of course, echo the sentiments of Archbishop John. I have admired her wonderful commitment to her vocation, … well, for all my life! She has been a great witness to the best qualities of humanity whereby we can make a decision to give of ourselves and stick with it through thick and thin.

By the way, you will have noticed that the paving in front of the church (and presbytery) has had a good clean. A local company, Flawless Cleaning Services, did the work free of charge for the church. They undertake such work for others and invite you to nominate any worthy causes. Of course should you wish to employ the company to work for you then the work they have done for us is a reference for them. The number is 07898 154279

 God Bless,                  Fr Doug

Dear Parishioners

The week has been dominated by the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and there has been quite a wide range of reaction. A few people have found the coverage to be tiresome but most feel a connection at some level and a desire to participate in some way in what is going on. Only the hardy have queued for hours and hours to pay their respect as Her Majesty lies “In State” but all of us can at least return to the prayerful intervention that our Archbishop led us in last week:

“We give thanks to Almighty God for Her Majesty’s life of unfailing dedication and the outstanding example of Her Majesty’s service, faithful unto death. We now pray for the repose of her soul, remembering the promise of Christ, who is the Resurrection and the life: ‘I am with you always, even until the end of time.’ (Mt 28:20) May Her Majesty rest in peace and rise in glory. We pray too for our King, for the Queen Consort and for all the Royal Family at this time.”

Also pages that will form our own Book of Condolence are available for signing in the Church Foyer. It will remain there over the next few weeks before we bind it and sent it to the Palace.

We beseech you Almighty God, that your servant Elizabeth, who by your mercy received the government of this realm, and who dedicated her life entirely to the service of her people, may now rest from her labours in the peace of Christ which surpasses all understanding. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

I shall be away this week. Masses will be said by clergy from Erith, to whom we are very grateful.

Note though that there is no mass on Tuesday.

God Bless,             Fr Doug

CANON PETER STODART

Canon Peter is now the tenant in the Parish Flat, although as you know, due to an accident he is unable to take up occupancy at the moment. His physiotherapy is going well however, and he hopes to move in sometime in October and is looking forward to being part of the parish of St. John Fisher in his retirement. Please keep him in your prayers.
