We are witnessing a terrible tragedy in Ukraine. Citizens in both those countries, and indeed around the world are being drawn into hatred and anger and away from unity and peace. The existence of evil here is not in doubt. The threat of escalation to a nuclear conflict is an evil action that the world has in the past, agreed must never happen. And yet it is being spoken of now as a mere tactical advancement. The whole world has already been grievously damaged by the invasion but steps towards a total disaster are now being taken. We must renew our efforts in prayer to touch the hearts of those involved, and especially those with power, so that the world can  move away from evil and hatred back towards unity and peace.

Dear Parishioners,

More of you are accepting the invitation to “take the chalice” at mass. It is perfectly safe to do so. It is a beautiful way of sharing in Christ’s sacrifice on the Cross of Calvary. It reminds us particularly of Christ’s challenge to James and John: “Can you drink from the cup that I shall drink from?” He meant that to drink from his cup was to express a solidarity with him such that we join him in suffering as well as in glory. This was his covenant, the covenant expressed in his blood. Well, James and John both said they could drink from that cup and both accepted the consequences.

So, it is a powerful sign and statement. However, it really is not essential. In both ways that we are able to receive Holy Communion we receive Christ himself, body, blood, soul and divinity.

             God Bless,                Fr Doug

Dear Parishioners,

Thanks to all who responded so quickly to our invitation to help out in our St. John Fisher Day celebrations. Our patronal feast is on June 22nd and we celebrate the day on Sunday 25th. We are planning a garden party with a barbecue and other lunches available too. The bar will be open, and we want to arrange for activities for the children who come along.

The event will be heavily subsidised through a bequest from a parishioner.

WE NEED MORE OFFERS OF ASSISTANCE HOWEVER:

(1) General organisation and management of the event, including selling tickets.

(2) Catering, which involves barbecuing (!), organising accompanying food, doing teas and coffees, etc.

(3) Setting up team – tables etc

(4) Clearing up team

(5) Arranging activities for children – No offers yet!

There are clipboards in the foyer to receive offers of assistance, or if it is easier have a word with one of the parish council.  Please come forward to attend the event and, if possible, play a limited part in its production. If everyone does a little bit, then nothing is burdensome.

                        God Bless,                Fr Doug
