Dear Parishioners,
We continue to pray for Fr Francis Hartley, Parish Priest of St John Fisher 2001 – 2013 who died last week. No details of his funeral have been made known to us yet.

We received notification on Friday evening of the steps that we will need to take in order to get our church open. Not all churches will be able to meet the requirements. Only those who can will be allowed to open. The aim is to open for private prayer ONLY. No services are to occur.

We have not been told when this can happen, merely to be ready for it.
In St. John Fisher the proposal is to open for prayer before the blessed sacrament between 10.00 and 11.00 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

• Doors will remain open to ensure good ventilation and to avoid touching of handles etc.
• A limited number of people would be able to enter the church and “take a pew” with social distancing applied except for members of the same household.
• Hands will need to be cleansed on entry and exit.
• Everyone will leave the church by the exit through the hall so as not to pass others.
• While face coverings can be reassuring, masks will not be a requirement.
• Given that the virus only lasts on surfaces for a limited time, different seating areas in the church will be used each day. Nevertheless the church will have to be cleansed regularly.
• There will be no toilet facilities available.
• Two stewards are to be on duty each time the church is open to ensure safe practice.

SO, we need to assemble teams of stewards who (after training) will staff the church during these opening times. One will be in the porch to give instructions and one will be in the church to supervise. They will act on a rota. Without volunteers stepping forward the church cannot open. Anyone willing to take a turn at this should contact me by email or by dropping a note through my door. Please supply contact details and which of the days you could (from time to time) cover.

ALSO, we need teams of cleaners who will take turns to cleanse specific areas of the church like grab rails, handles, and so on a regular basis. Again, anyone willing to take a turn at doing this should contact me by email or by dropping a note through my door. Please supply contact details and which of the three days you could (from time to time) cover.

If there are not sufficient volunteers the church cannot re-open. Please step forward!

• If you haven’t found the parish mass, then on the website: http://www.stjohnfisherbexley.org go to the Sunday Mass button and click on there.

• The parish office is open on a limited basis.
• If you want a mass offered then just write the details on an envelope enclosing the mass offering.

Dear Parishioners,
Very sadly I have to inform you that Fr Francis Hartley died on Thursday morning. Tragically his brother, Fr Edmund Hartley died on Tuesday morning! The third brother, Fr John Hartley remains in residential care but is needless to say, very shaken. Let us keep him in our prayers as we pray for the souls of Frs Francis and Edmund. Details of their funerals are not available at this time. We will in any case have a memorial service for Fr Francis in Church when we are open again.
Fr Francis was Parish Priest here in St John Fisher from 2001 till 2013
Before that he was at Our Lady Help of Christians in Blackheath. I had the privilege of living with him in the presbytery there for a while in 1992 when I was appointed Chaplain to the newly opened Christ the King Sixth Form College. He was a most gracious host and I was inspired by his dedication to his ministry, particularly his parish visiting. May he rest In peace.

FR FRANCIS
Fr Francis took his role as priest, administering the sacraments and visiting the sick, very seriously. He was a great parish visitor going out every day of the week. He promoted marriage and family life and was highly supportive of anyone seeking his help in these matters. He was also a first rate musician and often played the organ in the church. His favourite hymn was ‘All my Hope on God is Founded’. Fr Francis was a humble and faith-full gentleman who will be greatly missed.

CATHOLIC CORONAVIRUS APPEALS
With the lockdown many people are hard hit financially at this time. Charities are also being hit with the loss of fundraising events and their income from investments being reduced. But some may find that by staying at home they are not spending and have money to spare. After making sure that our contributions to the parish are being made or reserved, there are a number of Catholic charities to whom one might wish to donate.

Dear Parishioners,

During this time those who are elderly and vulnerable have taken a prominent place in our thoughts and expressions of good will. We should remember though, how difficult a time that this has also been for young people and for children, many of whom are also ‘vulnerable’. Many are continuing their studies online, and that’s not at all easy and demands real application. Many have been doing examinations too. Not being able to meet up with friends especially at school is a real challenge and hardship. To you we say “Well done and keep at it!” and to everyone else: let’s keep them and their parents (!) in our thoughts and prayers and look for opportunities to support them.

Also please confront the fatigue that is creeping in to efforts to thwart the virus and keep everyone safe. And please renew your commitment to those in isolation and make that phone call or drop in something to read or whatever! This remains a very painful situation for many of our fellow parishioners and neighbours, especially those who are alone.
