As we enter November our thoughts turn to those loved ones who have gone before us:

  • We have a Book of Remembrance that will be brought to the altar in the offertory procession so that those whose names you record in it will be prayed for during the mass.
  • Next weekend we celebrate Remembrance Sunday and we will pray for those who died during the two world wars.
  • The following weekend (20/21 Nov) we will pray for those who have had funerals here during the past year. Each of their names will be read out loud and a candle will be lit in remembrance of each soul. A final candle will be lit for all those listed in the Book of Remembrance. (This will occur on the sanctuary as the procession by parishioners holding candles has not been allowed in church for several years.) This can be a very moving occasion and you are encouraged to invite anyone you know who might wish to remember loved ones in this way.                                      Screenshot 2020-04-15 at 15.38.24

COP26 PRAYER

Loving God, We praise your name with all you have created.

You are present in the whole universe, and in the smallest of creatures.

We acknowledge the responsibilities you have placed upon us as stewards of your creation.

May the Holy Spirit inspire all political leaders at COP26 as they seek to embrace the changes needed to foster a more sustainable society.

Instil in them the courage and gentleness to implement fairer solutions for the poorest and most vulnerable and commit their nations to the care of Our Common Home.

We ask this through Our Lord Jesus Christ your Son. Amen

At last, the COP26 Climate Talks get underway in Glasgow this week.

This Conference is about subject matter that is absolutely vital to the future – ultimately to the future of the entire planet, but most imminently to the most vulnerable people on earth, the poor and the powerless. I can’t think of any moral issue that should engage us more than this, and I urge you to keep it in your prayers and to use any opportunity you are offered to help make things better, or at least to slow down the decline of our planet.  We owe it to the next generation.

This week I was present at a Mass in St. John’s Seminary, Wonersh to mark its closure. Many of the priests of the diocese, including me, were trained there. It was sad to observe that numbers wishing to be trained there cannot justify its continuation. Priests for our diocese are now being trained at Allen Hall, in Chelsea. It is also true that many of the priests serving in our diocese are from abroad. We are blessed in their ministry but we should also renew our efforts to pray for, to encourage, and to support vocations to the priesthood in our own country.
God bless.
