Happy Easter to you all.
First of all, a big welcome to any visitors to the Church today to celebrate this great event of Easter.
What a joy it has been – so far(!) – to celebrate Easter here at St. John Fisher. We have been able to journey with the Lord on a Way that led him through suffering and death to joy and new life. That journey also describes our path and our calling through difficulties, through suffering and yes, through death to joys and to new life. We place our trust with Him.
Let me thank everyone involved: The stewards, the readers, the cleaners, the altar servers, the sacristans, those who have led the Stations of the Cross, those in the music ministry, those who produced our Easter Garden, and of course those responsible for the wonderful floral display.
I also offer my personal thanks for your personal gift in the Easter offering.
As we celebrate this wondrous day in the freedom of our land, you may well be aware and certainly not surprised that the Israelis banned the celebration of Easter in Jerusalem. Mass on Palm Sunday was nevertheless celebrated by the Latin Patriarch in the Garden of Gethsemane. He said in his sermon
“Today Jesus weeps once more over Jerusalem. He weeps over this city, which remains a sign of both hope and sorrow, of grace and suffering. He weeps over this Holy Land, still unable to recognize the gift of peace. He weeps for all the victims of a war that seems without end: for divided families, for shattered hopes. But the tears of Jesus are never fruitless. They open our eyes, challenge us, and reveal the truth.”
We too weep for the people of Palestine and Gaza and for so many others suffering in the region.
God Bless, Fr Doug
