Dear Parishioners,

When we celebrated the Feast of St. James during last week, we were reminded of Jesus’s challenge to him (and his brother): “Can you drink (from) the Cup that I am going to drink?” They replied that they could. Drinking from the same cup has in many times and many cultures signified a solidarity, and a sharing. It makes those who do so a bit like “blood brothers”. So, when we are offered the cup or chalice at mass, the same challenge is given and then taken up by those who receive – “We can follow you in death”. St James was the first apostle to be martyred. At mass it is not essential to receive the cup physically, but we should, as we return to our seat, make a spiritual commitment to be joined with Our Lord in this way.

God Bless,                        Fr Doug
